Continental Gatorskin 700C – Reviewed

Are you sick of getting punctures? I know we are, or should I say were, right now punctures seem to be a thing of the past now that we’ve discovered Continental Gatorskin’s, and  we could not be happier with their performace thus far! These tyres are made of thick galvonised rubber with a layer of Kevlar (or something similar) on the inside for added protection.

“The UK’s favourite training tyre A durable, fast yet tough tyre at a really nice price. The Duraskin® external mesh forms a protective sheild over the entire casing to help prevent cuts, puntures and abrasions. The slick German made natural rubber tread is designed to perform well in wet/wintery conditions”

That is how Continental describe them on their website, and I couldn’t have put it better myself, these tyres seem almost indestructable, we’ve been through some serious stuff in the gutters and there’s not even a scratch so far. A friend of mine recommened them to me, as he had been puncture free, rear and front, for almost an entire year, until he hit a curb and busted the rear tyre (which is understandable!).

I have never felt so comfortable on a pair of tyres in all of my cycling life, and picking up a pair for under £45 is more than reasonable for the piece of mind that they provide. I bought mine online, from Evans Cycles and even picked them up that very day!

Word of warning though, if you do not own a set of tyre levers or  have super human strength, get the guys in the shop to change them over for you, otherwise you will struggle to get the last 4-5 inches onto the rim! They are quite tough even with tyre levers, as my cheap ones proved by snapping in half midway through the second tyre change!

I have read that some people believe the rolling speed is changed dramitically with these tyres, but I haven’t noticed. Afterall, we’re not worried about milliseconds in the sprints or climbs, we’re concerned with the 15 – 30 minute inner tube repairs or replacements only to get another 30 meters down the road.

Obviously there will be some times where punctures are inevitable, but put a pair of Gatorskins on your machine and you’ll seldom have to worry yourself with them!
